Shit You Should Know: A Guide for Girls Part Four

Your Body: ‘Hip Dips’

Writing this as a 22-year-old, I can tell you my body has changed so much over the past 10 years it’s hard to believe there’s more to go. Your body is changing all the time as you age and live and so it’s totally natural to find a dark hair that wasn’t there the day before or realise you have a lost/put on a little wight. I am going to talk about things that you may be insecure about or not even know because I think it’s important to be educated about your body and know that you are not the only person experiencing the things that are happening to you.

This is a public PSA to tell you that you don’t need to share those pictures saying hip dips are normal, there is actually no such thing as hip dips. It’s just the way your pelvis is shaped. I could not name a single woman (except maybe the Kardashians/Jenners) that don’t have ‘hip dips’.

So, when I say there are no such thing as ‘hip dips’ I don’t mean they don’t exist, I mean it is a naturally occurring form in your body due to the shape of your pelvis. It’s not because you have put on a little wight or don’t do the right exercises, it’s because that’s just the way your body is shaped. It is a common misconception that not having them is a sign of how healthy you are but it is nothing to do with that. Yes, the amount of fat you have can make hip dips more prominent but they aren’t something you should be embarrassed about.

I know a lot of girls get embarrassed about having ‘hip dips’ and try to get rid of them through diet and exercise which might help a little but you cannot change your bone structure which is what creates them in the first place. Building muscle on your hips can make them less visible but there shouldn’t be this stigma around real women’s bodies and how they look.
