Your Body: Breasts
Writing this as a 22-year-old, I can tell you my body has changed so much over the past 10 years it’s hard to believe there’s more to go. Your body is changing all the time as you age and live and so it’s totally natural to find a dark hair that wasn’t there the day before or realise you have a lost/put on a little wight. I am going to talk about things that you may be insecure about or not even know because I think it’s important to be educated about your body and know that you are not the only person experiencing the things that are happening to you.
Breasts, boobs, jugs, melons, whatever you want to call them, they are wonderful. They come is every size, shape and colour and so the thing you are probably insecure about isn’t even an issue. I think this is mostly evident when someone with larger breasts is jealous of someone will smaller breasts and vice versa. Once again it doesn’t help when we are bombarded with images of models with the ‘perfect chest’ or have breast enhancing products, tips and tricks shoved in our faces.
Your body will develop based on genetics, hormones and lifestyle but sometimes it’s a free for all because my mum and I have totally different bodies. As you can probably see just from meeting other women, everyone’s breasts are different sizes and no there is no need to be insecure about the size of yours. When I was a teenager, I was so jealous of everyone with larger breasts than me but I was just unaware that I was basically still a child and needed more time to develop. Your breasts will change size, shape and texture as you grow older let alone if you become pregnant.
Also, women get ashamed of the shape of their breasts but once again, everyone is different. There is Archetype which are round and full with a point at the nipple, this is the shape bra companies model their designs around because it’s the most common (that doesn’t mean it’s what yours should look like!). Asymmetrical is the shape where your breasts are two different sizes which is actually really common, they are normally uneven by about a cup size. Athletic is when your breasts are wider with less breast tissue and more muscle. Bell shape is when they look kind of like a bell with a narrow top and rounder bottom. Close set is when your breasts only have a small gap or no gap at all between them and have a wider distance from your underarm. Conical is when they are shaped like cones rather than being rounder which is common for people with smaller breasts. East West is when your nipples point away from the centre of your body. Relaxed is when the breast has looser tissue and the nipples tend to point downward. Round breasts are full at both the top and bottom. Side set breasts have more space between them. Slender breasts are narrower and long with your nipples pointing down. And finally, teardrop is round with the bottom being a little fuller. Now you might read those and think yours don’t fit any of those descriptions which is totally fine, those are just the most common ones but everyone’s breasts look different.
Just like everyone’s shape being different, your nipples will look different too. The colour of your nipples can range anywhere from dark brown to pink and that is normally dependant on your skin tone (the colour will change when you get pregnant as well). I was once told that your perfect nude lipstick is the same colour as your nipples so next time you’re buying some, whip them out. Your nipples will also look different depending on your cycle, the temperature and how you’re feeling.
There are some things you need to watch out for though such as a lump, area of thickened tissue, change of size or shape, discharge from your nipples, swelling, dimpling, rash or change in the appearance of your nipple. You should make sure to frequently perform self-exams by feeling on and around your breasts and underarms, I do mine in the shower because I read it was easier to spot differences when your skin is soft.
