My Night Routine

I recently posted about my morning routine and so I thought I would now write about my nightly routine. I like to stick to routines in the morning and at night to help start/end my day in the right way. My night routine helps me wind down after the day and get me ready for sleep while also looking after myself. Normally my night routine will start with having dinner, doing a workout and having some time to chill out before getting ready for bed.

The first thing I do is remove my makeup. If I am doing a workout then I will obviously remove my makeup before I do that. I use the Clinique ‘take the day off’ cleansing balm or the Garnier Micellar cleansing water. It is so important to remove your makeup before going to bed, you can end up with acne, skin infections and general dirtiness if you don’t.

After removing my makeup (and maybe a workout) I brush my teeth. You are meant to brush your teeth twice a day and I know a lot of people forget to do this at night. You need to remove the day from your mouth. While brushing my teeth I also have my retainer being cleaned in Retainer Brite to make sure it is nice and hygienic to put in my mouth. I also make sure to floss every night and use mouth wash. Once my mouth is nice and clean, I put in my retainer for the night.

The next thing I do is wash. I hop in the shower to wash my body and also use my facial cleansers. I am trying very hard to look after my skin and so I am making sure I treat it properly by washing/cleansing every morning and night with the right products. I use Dove shower wash on my body and then my regular skin cleansers on my face. I make sure to exfoliate my whole body at least twice a week, I also only wash my hair at night. In the shower I will shampoo, condition, leave the conditioner in while I wash, exfoliate, cleansers and then wash out the conditioner. I also make sure to use warm water instead of hot as it is better for your hair and skin.

Once I am out the shower, I will make my room feel nice and cosy while I dry off a little. I put on my diffuser, turn on some mood lighting, put on some relaxing music and sometimes light some candles.

My next step is to do my skin care. I will moisturise my body before moving on to my face. Once I have done my facial routine and the moisturiser has dried, I then make sure to put on after sun. I make sure to wear sunscreen every day and so I also make sure to use after sun every night.

After my skin is all prepped and ready for bed, I put on my PJs. I try to wear silk or similar to bed as it is good for your skin and honestly feels so nice and comfy.

Before actually getting into bed I brush my hair. My hair texture is really weird and is also a mixture of straight, wavy and curly so I try to look after it as much as possible, if I don’t brush it before bed then it is a nest in the morning. If I have washed my hair then I will put a leave in conditioner in and brush it with a wide tooth comb.

Once I am in bed, I will usually watch a little TV, write in my diary then read a book until I am tired enough to fall asleep. I usually only watch one episode before turning the TV off and then I don’t get that far in my book as I get tired really quickly.

I used to struggle really badly with sleep. I would lie in bed looking at the ceiling for hours and tried everything to help fall asleep. Since I have kept to a nightly routine and tried some other methods of falling asleep, I have no problem at all. It is important to look after yourself while also winding down at the end of the day. I guarantee if you just hop into bed without any preparation for sleep then you either can’t fall asleep or don’t get good quality sleep.
