I love to read. I know a lot of people who hate reading but I think they just haven’t found the right book yet. A lot of people read their first books in school, something they are assigned and not something they will necessarily enjoy. But books are amazing, someone creating whole new worlds with people you get surprisingly attached too just through words. They can make you cry or laugh or change your mind and there is so much power in the stringing together of the right words. I have always loved reading and in another life wouldn’t mind taking a crack at writing. Until that other life arrives though, I am perfectly happy reading the words of someone else.
My favourite book is The Great Gatspy. This was a book I was assigned to read in school and I burned through it in one day. I read it just before the movie version came out and so the plot wasn’t spoiled for me. Even for people who have seen the movie and not read the book, it is an amazing read. There is a reason why it has become so famous and I definitely understand why it is studied so much. The use of language, foreshadowing and metaphor is truly amazing. This book might not be for everyone as it was written quite a few decades ago, but it’s a small and beautiful story.
Right now, I am reading the Game of Thrones series. I am a massive fan of the show (not the ending) and so when I saw a copy of the first book on sale, I thought I would give it a go. The fantasy genre has never been something I actively read but I was hooked right away. The description is so in depth you can imagine every detail, I wasn’t even imagining the people/places in the show. I am so intrigued to see where the story goes and read an ending that will hopefully satisfy me in a way the show just didn’t. Lucky for the readers, the show overtook the books and so they won’t end the same way.
Another book I was assigned in school was Lord of the Flies. I put off reading this book for ages, faking my way through papers and presentations but as an adult I thought I would finally read it. I loved every minuet of it. Who wouldn’t love a story about some school boys who are stranded on an island after their plane crashes? The story (to me) represents what would probably happen if there wasn’t an already made system in place for us to follow. It would be madness.
Another book series I loved was the Maze Runner. I watched the first two movies purely because Dylan O’Brien was playing the lead but I ended up really liking them so, when I found out they where based on a book series I had to read them. I read the original three books just before the final movie came out and it actually made me enjoy the final movie so much more. There is also a prequel book called The Kill Order and another called The Fever Code but I am yet to read them both.
My final recommendation in this post is Submarine. I watched the film of this book before reading it but it didn’t spoil the experience as quite a few things are different. It is a story about a teenage boy who thinks his parents are splitting up and is also trying to lose his virginity to his girlfriend. He lies a lot and does some hilarious things on his quest to fix his family and keep his girlfriend.
So, those are some book I have read and would recommend to others. I obviously have so many more that I can talk about and so maybe in the future I will. I think it is important to read, get your mind working. I know lockdown is ending but if like me you aren’t at work still or you are trying to stay inside as much as possible you might still be looking for something to do, reading is always a great way to entertain yourself. Reading is fun and I lose hours with my head in a book.
